Learn and Lead Leadership : IEP Meeting Facilitation and Legal Compliance

A TWO DAY EVENT - FEB 21 & 22, 2024

The IEP Technical Assistance (TA) Center is pleased to announce participant registration for the LEArn and LEAd Leadership: IEP Meeting Facilitation and Legal Compliance. LEArn and LEAd is a professional learning opportunity offered at no cost for local education agency (LEA) representatives and special education teachers.

Participants will attend a two-day training program with suggested tools and strategies that can assist LEA Representatives in fulfilling their roles and responsibilities. These responsibilities include ensuring that all IEP Team members are provided the opportunity for meaningful participation and input; using effective visual tools and other strategies for keeping IEP meetings on track, particularly when legal mishaps (“Critical Action Times” (“CATs”) occur; preventing, intervening and resolving potential conflict; addressing difficult behaviors and conversations effectively; and, as a result, ensuring that an overall organized, efficient and legally compliant meeting occurs. Through the provision of sample process management tools and an IEP meeting demonstration, it is the LEArn and LEAd goal that participants will take away immediate ideas and tools they can use in IEP meetings, along with improved knowledge and skills to support effective collaboration between parents and school staff, while also avoiding misunderstandings, distrust and anxiety that can often result in special education legal disputes. In addition, the session will address IEP content and implementation issues based upon IDEA caselaw, supplemented by group activity and discussion regarding the LEArn and LEAd program and plans of action to implement process and content suggestions provided.
